FRIDAY October 31 2014 Issue 1084

Afro Circus comes to town for Light Party Roll up...roll up...for the Afro Circus community Light Party in Beachlands this Friday, October 31. The Afro Circus is a family friendly alternative to Halloween hosted by the Beachlands Baptist Church. It is the seventh year the church has promoted a positive alternative to witches, goblins and ghouls. And each year has proven exceptionally popular with the community. “Last year’s circus party was amazing with more than 400 children and their parents enjoying a great night,” says pastor Neil Hamilton. “This year looks like being even more fun for the whole family.” Guests at this year’s

circus include Marty the psychedelic zany zebra and professional clown Popcorn. A circus school will capture kids’s imaginations as they learn circus skills and performance tricks. There will also be plenty of carnival games, kids’ crafts, balloon twisting, petting zoo and lolly scramble as well as bouncy castles, a merry-go-round and face painting. A dance party led by DJ Afro is a chance for everyone to get in the groove to some funky music. And of course, as always, there will be plenty of prizes and lollies! So why not dress up in your best circus, afro or jungle costume (no scary costumes, please) for a

Servicing a wood burner every year ensures they will burn cleanly which means there is no need for Auckland Council’s proposed legislation. So says Whitford chimney sweep/fireplace specialist, Lance Gedge. Lance, a former Franklin Local Board member, says he is concerned at plans by Auckland Council to prohibit open fires and pre-2005 wood burners from October 2018. “I won’t argue on behalf of open fires as I don’t think it’s a battle we can win. However there’s no need to ban the pre 2006 wood burners as they can be operated exactly in the same way as the post 2006 Eco fires,” says Lance.

party then head out to the Clevedon fireworks display afterwards.,” he explains. “This year there’ll also be a cafe for the adults where they can enjoy a professionally made cappucino or latte.”

The Afro Circus opens its doors at 6pm, finishing at 8pm. Entry for children is $5 with accompanying adults free or $15 for a family. So don’t miss the fun... roll up.

“The only real difference between the two is the air controller. All wood burners can function in an almost smokeless fashion and it is very easy to make them do so. “All you need to do is to service your wood burner yearly, burn dry seasoned and non treated wood. You also use the air supply throttle in the mid to high positions.” Lance says the council is being “a bit nanny state” by banning non-Eco woodburners when these older models can be used in exactly the same way as thir newer counterparts. “This proposal will cause great hardship for thousands of Auck• TO PAGE 2

Fun Run organised to help family of hit and run victim A fun run is to be held on Sunday November 9 to raise funds for the family of Maraetai hit and run victim Richard Samuels. Richard (41) was killed by a hit and run driver in Meadowlands on Saturday October 18. The run is being organised by James McWatt, who owns Beachlands-based personal fitness business, WOWFIT. Details of the event are in his ad on page 3 of this PC Times.

Beachlands’ Laurel McWatt, related to James by marriage, and who works for Richard Samuels’ employer, McWatt Group Ltd, says the run has the support of Richard’s family. Richard was head mechanic for the McWatt Group – an East Tamaki based earthmoving business. “Everyone here is extremely devastated. Richard was a big part of our company...the yard is very quiet without him,” says Laurel.

The Silly Season is with us again!... THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz

Here we are again...Silly Season! This Friday marks what surely must be the weirdest and most completely pointless festival celebrated in New Zealand: Halloween. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica the festival has its origins in ancient Britain and Ireland. The Celtic Festival of Samhain was observed on October 31, at the end of summer. The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, goblins, black cats, fairies and demons said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. In addition, Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health, and death. It was the only day on which the help of the devil was invoked for such purposes. Sounds like great stuff for the kids. Not. However, these days it is more likely to be seen as being an important means of keeping The Warehouse in profit.

Bylaw will mean hardship for some • FROM PAGE 1 land’s residents. The cost of a new wood burner is between three and five thousand dollars installed,” says Lance. “Generally when an existing wood burner is condemned due to old age they are not replaced. Under this proposal thousands of rental properties will lose their primary source of heating. Add to this the multitude of households on fixed incomes – mainly the elderly.” He says the industry is mostly self-regulated anyway, due to insurers’ insistence for users to maintain their fires. “Regular checks not only clean and pick up faults but provide good advice to customers

But there are now some good alternatives for the kids. Get along to the Afro Circus this Friday at the Beachlands Baptist Church, 59 Third View Ave, 6 to 8pm ($5 kids, $15 family, adults free). Marty the Zebra and Popcorn the Clown will be there, with carnival games, merry-go-round, bouncy castles, balloon twisting, petting zoo and much more. There are prizes for the best Afro/jungle costumes, but please leave the vampire outfits at home! Likewise if you are in the Clevedon District, Kawakawa Bay is also staging its Saints & Angels Party on Saturday November 1, 5 to 7pm, in the Kawakawa Bay Hall and village green, for all children under 14. There are outside and inside games. Dress up as warrior or wahine, or lady or gentleman, or bring something Kiwi. Silly Season continues with Guy Fawkes Night when we celebrate the failed plot by one Guido Fawkes and his Catholic co-conspirators to blow up the Protestant King James I of England in 1605. Four hundred and nineteen years seems a long time to bear a grudge. Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination provided that “this testemonye of joy be carefull done without any danger or disorder”. It’s the “disorder” part I have an issue with. I have no problem with fireworks being let off on November 5, or

that further allows good burning practise.” Lance questions whether the proposal will set up another layer of bureaucracy that “will cost Auckland’s ratepayers yet more of their hard earned dollars to implement?” He is planning to send a “novel-sized” submission to the council, has already been on the Marcus Lush Show on Radio Live and has contacted radio talkback host Leighton Smith. “I’m so fired up about this – if you don’t mind the pun!”

Prima

should I say November 6 (because inevitably it always rains on November 5). Or even a day or two either side. But I do draw the line at having to listen to them just about every second night until mid February. Once again, there are great alternatives. The Clevedon Residents Association annual fireworks display at the Clvedon A & P Showgrounds is on this Friday, entry from 5.30pm, with the display once it gets dark. MEANWHILE, it’s also the roadworks season. Beachlands resident Derek Brandt tells me on one day recently he counted 511 traffic cones between the corner of Murphys Rd and Ormiston Rd to the Beachlands roundabout. I admire his fortitude! I do urge patience and plead with locals not to speed and to obey the temporary road signs. It also helps reduce the number of busted windshields. And while we all applaud the efforts being made to make our main road safer, I would also appeal to roading contractors to do their best to be reasonable in allowing the free flow of traffic while these works are taking place. A couple of weeks ago, for example, I drove from Whitford to Beachlands past a plethora of temporary 50kph signs yet without the slightest evidence of any road works of any description going on anywhere.

Alert neighbours save house Vigilant neighbours and a smoke alarm prevented a potentially serious house fire in Spinnaker Bay over Labour Weekend. On Sunday, neighbours in Columbia Cres phoned the Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade when an alarm went off, and they were unable to contact the house occupants who were away. As with a lot of modern homes, the smoke alarm was wired to an outside burglar alarm. A neighbour had a key to the home which allowed brigade members to enter where they found a gas stove still on and a pot, that had contained eggs, burnt dry. The result was a lot of smoke, but no damage. Chief Fire Officer Shane Rutherford says the incident shows the importance of having working smoke alarms – especially if linked to a loud burglar alarm, and friendly neighbours who were willing to keep an eye on the property, plus one who had key access. It also highlighted the need for home occupants to check stoves and ovens are turned off before leaving the house.

Kiwi being released on Rotoroa Island

Kiwi will soon be roaming Rotoroa Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Three kiwi chicks, hatched at Auckland Zoo from eggs collected from Te Mata in the Coromandel are being

released onto the 83ha isle, and more chicks are due for release in November. Up to 20 chicks could be released onto Rotoroa each year. On reach-

ing 1.2kg – large enough to have a chance against introduced predators on the mainland, the birds will be returned to the 2500ha protected area on the Thames coast .

FEATURE PROPERTY: October 31, 2014

Beachlands - For Sale: Auction A first home buy in Beachlands...you must be kidding! We’re not. Such homes may be few and far between but can sometimes still be found. Here’s one on Beachlands Road. What’s more, it’s the perfect family home and even has a swimming pool, spa, bush section and a great view. It’s one of those traditional Beachlands homes that has sort of evolved over time, rather than by design. As a result, nothing is quite where you would expect it to be. This gives the home great personality and a sense of adventure and fun. Kids will love it. The front entrance opens onto a hallway. To the right is a spacious room that could be for anything – perhaps a rumpus, kids play area, entertainment room, informal living area, or an office for a home and income business. On the far side is internal access to a single car garage. At the back is sliding door access to an outside ground-level deck and spa. The deck leads to a recently re-lined swimming pool, properly fenced, with plenty of deck area for poolside dining. While we’re outside, take a look at the big rear section that includes lawn and an area of bush with mature trees and some spectacular native ferns. The tuis were in good voice while we were visiting. The view looks across the corner of Spinnaker Bay to Waiheke Island. Back to the front door and to the left on entry is a big

laundry which comes with an elevated toilet that is, almost literally, a throne!.The laundry leads around the corner to a private room – ideal for guests. The hallway leads upstairs to a top storey that is far more modern and contemporary in its design. The first thing you notice is a sudden lift in the temperature as the sun streams into the living area through windows and sliding doors that lead out to an upstairs deck where the view is even better. There’s a wood burner for winter heating. There’s an open plan dining area – also with sliding door access to the deck – and a reasonably modern and spacious kitchen. A hallway leads to three more bedrooms. The master bedroom has sliding door access to the deck and there’s plenty of wardrobe space. There’s a small bedroom at the end, currently used as an office, but would make an ideal nursery or toddler’s room as it’s also nice and handy to mum and dad’s bedroom. Also off the hallway are separate toilet and bathroom. This is one of those properties that can’t be put into a neat category because it’s decidedly unique! ~ Duncan Pardon

CLEVEDON & DISTRICTS Clevedon A & P Show, showgrounds, Monument Rd, November 8-9

Show time comes to Clevedon

This year boasts the 101st Annual Clevedon A&P Show, an event steeped in tradition and dear to the hearts of generations since its inception in 1909. “As always we are looking forward to celebrating with you as you come along to enjoy this great family event in a rural atmosphere as we move into our second century,” says one of the organising team Danielle Wright.

LIVING, WORKING AND SUPPORTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

People from far and wide as well as locals with their families, friends, horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, pets and prized home made goods come together for this country event which nowadays has a few modern twists.. There’s excitement from the moment you enter the gate this year with the opportunity to win a gate prize and an ‘I spy’ adventure for the younger event goers which, if they complete all the tasks, sees them receive a lucky dip prize. There are, of course, animals of all shapes and sizes as well as the famous Farmyard where show visitors can get up close and personal with a wide range of friendly animals, some with their offspring in tow. Then there is the popular food and wine tent, trade stalls galore and entertainment for the whole family. New to the show this year is a family area where younger children can enjoy some more traditional games, giant floor puzzles, snakes and ladders and many more. Horse and cart rides, flying foxes, ferris wheel and electric go carts add to the fun while hilarious Harold the Horse returns to the ring to cavort and entertain the crowds, amusing the inner kid in all of us. This year Harold has a foal and you will have to be there to find out how the new addition to the act performs. Another new addition to the show family this year is the ‘Lecture Tent’ filled with all kinds of information from keeping bees to building fences and tending your veggie garden - there will be something for everyone.

Proposed temporary road closure It is proposed that Monument Rd to Hyde Rd, Hyde Rd, Papakura-Clevedon Rd (between Hyde Rd and Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd) and Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd to McNicol Rd be closed from 2.30pm until 4.30pm on Saturday 13 December 2014 for the Clevedon Santa Parade.

Maori TV films in Clevedon

Maori Television was in Clevedon last week shooting a series of ads with NZ Post to promote safety in the water. Presenter Brent Mio – dressed in a matronly swimming costume as his alter ego, Nani Pupu – braved the water at Waiti Bay and the Wairoa River to create the three commercials, which are now being broadcast on the channel. Maori Television sales manager Toni Urlich says Nani Pupu will present messages in three key areas of water safety – river, boats and beach/rocks. She will be set against someone

Maori TV’s Brent Mio. who isn’t doing the right thing in the water. “She is a character that has a habit of sticking her nose in where it’s not wanted, but because she’s a Nani, she knows best,” says Urlich. “Brent is loving dress-

ing up for the shoot.” Out of the water, Brent is the presenter of Maori Television’s popular live entertainment show, Homai Te Pakipaki. The Grand Final screens from 8.30pm on Friday, November 14.

Morton Timber celebrates 35 years in business

Morton Timber, arguably one of Clevedon’s longest running family companies, is celebrating 35 years in business. Phil and Sheryl Morton bought their sawmill and timber yard on North Rd from Aubrey Hopkins in 1979.Phil had previously worked in the timber industry with Fletchers since leaving school. The couple lived over the road from the mill by the Wairoa River. At that time the mill employed four or five men and milled mainly macrocarpa which came from local blocks of land. The mill it was originally started by Harry Burdett in the early 1950s. The logs were mostly native and came from as far away as the Coromandel Peninsula. When Phil Morton started to mill locally sourced pine he increased the staff to 1012 men in the summer and milled up to 20 cubic metres of sawn timber a day. Today, the sound of

the saws and the smell of fresh sawdust is a thing of the past. Morton Timber and other smaller mills can buy sawn timber and roundwood cheaper than it can be milled and treated locally. However, the old mill is still in existence in the centre of the yardand gets started once in a while. Today, Morton Timber is a busy timber and post yard with truckloads of timber and posts plus poles, landscaping supplies and all other building materials going in and out of the yard six days a week.

A large warehous stocks all the plywood, dressed boards, gib board and hardware for the requirement of local farmers, builders and handymen. Morton Timber has continued to grow 35 years on, as the surrounding rural community has developed. The hardware store has greatly expanded and includes a wide range of products. Morton Timber proudly supports the community through sponsorship of local organisations (fishing clubs, bowls, school agriculture days, possum hunts, pony clubs, fire brigade, and the Clev-

edon A & P Show). They appreciate the opportunity to quote on any

project and welcome any new customers or just those who might like to

10 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (October 31st 2014)

Meet the voice of Rod

Beachlands resident, George Everts plays the role of ‘Rod’ in the upcoming Manukau Performing Arts production of the Broadway musical Avenue Q. Avenue Q is about real life in New York City, as told by a cast of people and puppets through a hilariously irreverent, Tony-winning book and score. It tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone’s looking for the same things he is. George Everts had his start in musical theatre in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at age 11. Unfortunately, the show never made it to opening night. Despite this, he fell in love with theatre, and has never looked back. Most recently, George has been involved in the AMT production of Mamma Mia at the Civic, and played Eddie in A Slice of Saturday Night.
